Korean grid paper
Square cells with a dotted cross inside — the standard ruling for Hangul practice. The cross marks the centre, so consonants and vowels land in consistent positions and letter size stops drifting.
English 4-line paper
Two guide lines, a solid baseline and a dashed midline marking the x-height — the standard ruling for learning letterforms. It keeps ascenders and descenders the right length.
Cursive slant paper
Four-line ruling with diagonal slant guides. Inconsistent slant is what makes cursive look untidy more than any other single thing, and these lines fix it faster than practice alone.
Tianzige (田字格)
A square divided into four quadrants by a solid cross — the foundational grid for writing Chinese characters. It tells you where each stroke should start and finish.
Mizige (米字格)
Tianzige plus diagonals, dividing the square into eight directions. The diagonals give you an angle reference for sweeping strokes, so it is the natural next step after 田字格.
Jiugongge (九宮格)
Each square divided into a three-by-three grid. Because you can describe any stroke by which of the nine boxes it starts and ends in, this is the classic grid for copying model calligraphy.
Japanese masume
Square cells with dotted cross guides and a gap between cells — the Japanese standard. That gap beside each cell is where furigana readings go.
Lined practice paper
Plain horizontal rules, 9mm apart. Without cells you write continuous sentences, which is what you actually need for copywork, journalling and letters.

Frequently asked questions
- Is it really free? Can I use these in a classroom?
- Yes, all free. Print them for yourself, for your class or for tutoring. Please just don't sell the files or redistribute them on another site.
- The cells print smaller than the stated size.
- Choose “Actual size (100%)” instead of “Fit to page” in the print dialog. Most browsers shrink the page slightly by default, which changes the cell size.
- Should I download A4 or US Letter?
- A4 is standard copy paper in Europe, Korea and Japan; Letter is standard in the US and Canada. The ruling is identical — only the number of rows changes.
- Which sheet should a beginner start with?
- Start with 4-line paper for the Latin alphabet, or Korean grid for Hangul. Inconsistent size and centring is the most common cause of untidy handwriting, so ruled cells come first. Move to lined paper once the letterforms are steady.
