Jiugongge (九宮格)
Each square divided into a three-by-three grid. Because you can describe any stroke by which of the nine boxes it starts and ends in, this is the classic grid for copying model calligraphy.

- Copying calligraphy models (linshu)
- Analysing character structure
- Reproducing proportions accurately
How to use it
- Compare the model and your character box by box.
- If the centre box is empty the character looks loose — fill the centre first.
- One careful attempt after studying the model beats ten quick repetitions.
